Strategic relations with Russia exist at declarative level only, political analyst
Political analyst Anatol Taranu believes that during the Communist administration Moldova did not manage to establish strategic relations with Russia and this is already the task of the democratic Government. The expert stated for Info-Prim Neo that the Moldovan-Russian relations cannot be named strategic now, but the fact that the sides want such relations is a very important thing.
“The Communists only spoke about strategic relations with Russia, but there were no such relations. The democratic Government is obliged to establish strategic relations between the two countries. However, until there is a kind of economic war between the sides, it is rather improbable that there will be a strategic partnership between Moldova and Russia,” the analyst said.
Acting President Marian Lupu said the Moldovan-Russian Treaty should be continued, while Premier designate Vlad Filat stressed the good relations with Russia are very important for Moldova.
The Basic Treaty between Moldova and Russia was signed ten years ago and expires this year. If no party wants to interrupt it, it will be renewed automatically for another ten years.
