Steps taken to consolidate national statistics

The Cabinet approved the draft law on official statistics that regulates the organization and functioning of the common statistical system and establishes the legal framework for developing, disseminating and coordinating official statistics, in accordance with the good European practice, IPN reports.

The bill provides for the reactivation of the National Statistical Council, which is a consultative body constituted under the Cabinet to strategically develop and promote official statistics. This consists of 15 members named by the executive.

The document is to be submitted to Parliament for examination and adoption.

In the same meeting, the Cabinet endorsed the strategy for developing the national statistical system for 2016-2020 and the plan of action for implementing it. Director of the National Bureau of Statistics Vitalie Valcov said the implementation of these documents represents a precondition for developing a sustainable national statistical system that will collect and disseminate credible official statistics, increasing simultaneously the capacities for satisfying the increasing requests for official statistics.

At the current stage, the strategy will be implemented at a cost of 60 million lei. These costs do not include a series of activities, such as the preparation for the 2020 census of agriculture and population census.
