Public policy expert Stefan Gligor thinks that electoral competition is only feigned now, as a number of competitors appear to concertedly pick on the Socialist Party lately. But this, says Gligor, only helps to galvanize the Socialist base.
“The Democratic Party needs to give the false appearance of a race going on ahead of elections. Like in any race, antagonism is key”, Stefan Gligor stated during the talk show “Politica Nataliei Morari” on TV8. However, notes the expert, nothing mobilizes the members and supporters of a party like the risk of disqualification from the race or similar attacks.
Gligor also noted that during every race politicians exploit inflammatory and often fear-eliciting issues. Fearmongering obfuscates reasonable thinking and leads people to vote emotionally. “In societies that are insufficiently developed politically, economically and legally this trick sometimes works”, said Gligor.
At the same time, political analyst Roman Mihaes suggested it’s natural for everyone across the political spectrum, both left and right, to want to obstruct the Socialists from winning the majority in Parliament. “The fewer seats they take, the better for everybody. Can’t argue with that”, said Mihaes, adding that PSRM’s disqualification is very unlikely.
