Stefan Fule: I didn’t feel pro-European spirit among rulers

Former European Commissioner for Enlargement and European Neighborhood Policy Stefan Fule, who had recently visited Moldova, said that he saw many EU flags being flown, but didn’t feel a pro-European spirit among the rulers, especially in the actions that these take, IPN reports, quoting an interview of the former Commissioner for Radio Free Europe.

Referring to a recent poll showing that the number of people who support the pro-European course of Moldova has decreased, Stefan Fule said that the politicians are the first to be blamed for this situation. “For the Moldovan politicians, it is a tradition to speak about a pro-European government and a pro-European agenda, but the people have ultimately obtained a series of scandals in the government coalition, which is a continuation of the weak, not at all democratic government. These misunderstands between the ruling parties are nothing else but a marginal view on the people’s needs. Also, given the too high expectations of what the country’s pro-European course represents, I’m not surprised that the people, not seeing concrete results, are disappointed,” stated Stefan Fule.

He also said that the country needs a pro-Moldova, pro-reform government that would promote also the reforms contained in the Association Agreement with the EU. It is what the people expect and this would help the relations between Moldova and the EU. The people do not need another government that would be only called pro-European and that would finally represent only an alibi for the oligarchs from Chisinau to continue the policy pursued until now.

“The most difficult thing is to stop the oligarchs from interfering in the state affairs and from using the state instruments in their interests. I think this is the most important task for the Moldovan politicians, if they want to offer the citizens all the benefits that result from the relationship between the Republic of Moldova and the European Union. The change comes from inside, but the politicians would better listen to the people who protest in the street and who state their views on what is going on and on how the quality of their lives could be improved,” said the former European Commissioner.

Stefan Fule added that another thing he would like to see, but which he could not influence is for a clear European perspective to be offered to Moldova, which was rather explicit about its European aspirations when it negotiated the Association Agreement.
