European Commissioner for Enlargement and European Neighborhood Policy Štefan Füle said after the meeting with Moldova’s President Nicolae Timofti that he came to Chisinau on a visit not to interfere in the internal affairs, but to deliverer the message that the EU will continue to support the country in its European aspirations. The statement was made in a news conference held jointly with the head of state, IPN reports.

Štefan Füle said that in order to cover the started road, Moldova needs political stability and he is confident that the politicians will overcome the political crisis, putting the country’s interests above the personal ones. Moldova can remain the success story of the Eastern Partnership, while the Vilnius Summit of November may be a success for our country.

As to the previous statements concerning the set of laws passed by the Moldovan Parliament on May 3, the official said that the European partners were concerned not about the haste in which the laws were adopted, but rather about the independence of some of the state institutions, which was brought into question. He made reference to the amendments to the legislation on the Constitutional Court, which provide that a judge can be dismissed if he loses the legislature’s trust.

President Nicolae Timofti told the journalists that he agreed with the European official to ask the political leaders to state their opinion as to how a parliamentary majority can be created. He also discussed with Štefan Füle the latest performance of the Constitutional Court. According to the head of state, the Court’s decision to declare the presidential decree nominating Vlad Filat for premiership as unconstitutional worsened the political crisis. He asked that the competent European bodies analyze the created situation and the legality of the Court’s decision of April 22.

Štefan Füle came to Chisinau on a private visit to take part in the Europe Day celebrations in Moldova.
