STEAM and artificial intelligence: challenges and opportunities for education

The synergy between STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics) and artificial intelligence is an important new development in pedagogy, and teachers need to adapt to these technologies quickly. By integrating them into teaching methods, education can evolve to better meet the needs of today's learners and keep pace with technological progress. The topic was discussed at the municipal conference with international participation: STEAM and AI: Synergy of Pedagogy and Technology, IPN reports.

According to Angela Cutasevich, deputy mayor of Chisinau, January 24 is marked International Education Day, and this year's theme is the synchronized approach between STEAM and artificial intelligence. According to Angela Cutasevich, students often outperform teachers in digital skills and use of artificial intelligence tools. Teachers also need to be aware of what opportunities these tools offer and why they are important to implement in the educational process.

Andrei Pavaloi, Deputy Head of DGETS, believes that the responsibility of teachers is high and when they do not try to persevere and keep up with the changes in the academic environment, they fail to cope with the changes. However, artificial intelligence cannot change inter-human relations and the inter-emotional bond between teacher and student.

According to UNESCO data, only 10% of schools and universities currently have framework plans on the use of artificial intelligence, only 10 countries have developed programs to develop artificial intelligence tools for teachers at the national level as mandatory competencies. In parallel, more and more countries are imposing restrictions on the use of artificial intelligence, mobile phones in classrooms and their use under certain conditions.
