Status and role of people’s ombudsman to be regulated by Constitution

Parliament passed a bill to add a new chapter to the Constitution of the Republic of Moldova in two readings.   The new chapter regulates the status and role of the people’s ombudsman. This is named to post by the legislature, by a majority of votes of MP, for a seven-year term that cannot be renewed, IPN reports.

The Constitution will provide that the people’s ombudsman during his term in office will be independent and impartial and will safeguard the interests of the people by protecting their rights. This will not be legally responsible for the opinions stated in connection with his mandate.

The interference in the work of the people’s ombudsman, intentional ignoring of his recommendations and hampering of his work in any way entail accountability. The people’s ombudsman could be dismissed by the votes of 2/3 of MPs, but not before listening to him.
