The Monument of Queen Maria of Romania was inaugurated in Chisinau, in the square of "Gheorghe Asachi" High School. The ceremony took place on the 107th anniversary of the union of Bessarabia with Romania, IPN reports.
The statue is over six meters high and depicts Queen Maria of Romania on the day of her coronation in Alba Iulia, with the Bible in her left hand. Sculptor Veaceslav Jiglitchi carved the queen's face in bronze, based on a design by architect Mihail Andries.
"The rector of the State University of Moldova, Academician Grigore Tinica, and Iulian Rusanovschi, PhD in legal sciences, who took the initiative for the unveiling, unveiled the monument with this message. The proposal was launched back in 2018 on the centenary of the unification.
The ceremony was attended by representatives of the political, religious and cultural community from both sides of the Prut. The state anthems of the Republic of Moldova and Romania were accompanied by the Border Police brass band.
