Statements after consultations with Europeans

The leaders of the pro-European parties – the PLDM, PDM and PL – on January 20 had consultations with the President of the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe Party Graham Watson, Chairman of the European Parliament’s Committee on Foreign Affairs Elmar Brok and Vice Chairman of the Group of Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament Knut Fleckenstein, IPN reports.

After the meeting, the leader of the PLDM Vlad Filat said that this discussion was an important one. “From my viewpoint, we took an important step towards better understanding the state of things. We continue to work. They recommended us to continue the European integration process and we will enjoy the support of the EU and the parties that take decisions at European level in this respect. We didn’t discuss the creation of a minority government, but the formation of a coalition by the three parties,” he stated. He also said that society must be strengthened and all those who can should contribute to Moldova’s integration into the EU.

The leader of the PDM Marian Lupu said that this visit shows the EU’s great interest in Moldova. It is a sign of interest for continuing the European integration polices. “Our colleagues didn’t come here to ask something or impose something on us. They do not interfere in the internal affairs of the country. They expressed interest and are ready to further support the policies we initiated. We didn’t discuss in detail the format of the coalition. If such discussions were held, this would mean interference and pressure. They were very correct,” he stated, noting that the EU wants a stable partner, with a stable political situation and united society at its border.

The head of the PL Mihai Ghimpu said that a conclusion he drew from the meeting is that the three parties must form an alliance. “We undertook the European course and must continue it if we are responsible,” he stated. He also said that after this meeting, the chances for forming a parliamentary majority increased, but each of the parties will decide how to act. He added that the PL made one more compromise concerning the ministries.
