The July 7 statement by the State Duma of Russia, concerning the negative trends in the development of the situation in Transnistria in connection with the negative actions of the Government of the Republic of Moldova and the Ukrainian authorities, is an warning. The opinion was stated in the program “Fabrika” on Publika TV channel, IPN reports.
Ion Leahu, ex-member of the Joint Control Commission, said it is not for the first time that the State Duma adopted such a document. This recent statement is a kind of warning, but without serious consequences. “Even if we apprehend the essence of this document and take into account the fact that it is a warning against a sovereign state, no serious arguments are provided for the formulated conclusion,” stated Ion Leahu.
Doctor of History Ruslan Shevchenko noted the State Duma’s statement represents Russia’s reaction to the Moldovan-Ukrainian attempt to set up joint customs posts. “This danger bothers the Russians and makes them resort to drastic measures as they realize that the establishment of these customs posts along the so-called border between the Transnistrian region and Ukraine will lead to an economic blockage in the region,” he said.
Ex-presidential adviser Victor Grebenshchikov considers this is a new warning by the Russian Federation and a kind of test to see the position of Chisinau on the issue. For now Russia wants to secure its interests in the Republic of Moldova in a different way, by promoting politicians who will safeguard these interests.
The State Duma’s statement says the Moldovan and Ukrainian authorities contribute to the creation of threats to the stability, welfare and security of the inhabitants of Transnistria. The State Duma called on the authorities of the two states to give up exerting any form of pressure on Transnistria.
