State University of Moldova marks 60 years since created
The State University of Moldova (SUM) marks on Sunday, October 1, 60 years from foundation.
At the festivity dedicated to the anniversary, the prime-minister Vasile Tarlev declared that SUM laid the grounds of technical, economic, juridical, sports higher-education in Moldova. The human and material potential of SUM was a base for the creation of many state and private higher-education institutions in Moldova.
The success of the reforms in education and of the planned objectives depends to agreat extent to the organizational capacities, competence, talent and innovative spirit of University’s teaching staff and of the conditions the state must ensure in order to fulfill these goals, the head of state added.
The State University of Moldova was founded on October 1, 1946, through the decision of the People Commissars Council of RSSM on March 4, 1946. In its first year, 1946-1947, The University had 320 students matriculated to 5 faculties: Physics and Mathematics; Geology and Pedology; Biology; Chemistry; History and Philology. Within the frameworks of 12 departments 58 teachers were working, including 4 university teachers and 9 readers. In 2006-2007, at those 12 faculties about 25.5 thousand students are studying, of which 640 candidates for master’s degree and over 380 candidates for doctor’s degree. The teaching staff, working in 59 departments is composed of 1430 teachers, including 13 academicians, 75 university teachers and over 300 university readers.
