State to provide roof slates and lumber for houses affected by tempests

The Cabinet on Friday decided to issue material goods from the state reserves and to allocate funds for alleviating the consequences of the tempests of July 26 and 27, IPN reports.

Minister of the Interior Adrian Efros said the torrential rain and high winds of June 26 affected over 100 localities in ten districts, especially in central and northern Moldova. The roofs of over 60 homes and also 18 social, cultural and agricultural facilities were destroyed. There were also damaged crop fields, vineyards and orchards on an area of over 700 hectares. The data are preliminary, but they are updated daily.

Under the Cabinet’s decision, 64,677 undulated roof slates and 493,200 cubic meters of lumber, to the total value of 16.317,8 million lei will be provided from the state reserves.

“The Ministry of the Interior and the General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations prepared the first lot of materials – roof slates and lumber. Over 1,000 slates and about 25,000 cubic meters of lumber are ready to be shipped to Edineț district, which was the worst hit by the tempests,” said the minister.

“What is important now is to act swiftly to repair the houses, especially the roofs, including of public institutions. The Ministry of Agriculture should consider helping those affected by compensating the losses sustained in orchards and crop fields,” stated Prime Minister Dorin Recean.

The materials released by the Material Reserves Agency of the Ministry of the Interior will be distributed to the local public authorities in the districts of Edineț, Soroca, Râșcani, Dondușeni, Drochia, and Hâncești for performing repair and building works on houses, administrative and cultural facilities that were damaged as result of the heavy rain and strong winds.
