A five-month-old baby from Sangerei on January 2was operated at the Mother and Child Institute in Chisinau to have the undeveloped fetus of his twin brother removed from his belly. The state of the child is stable.
Contacted by IPN, Steluta Andreev, spokeswoman for the Mother and Child Institute, said the boy was brought to the hospital with suspected tumor last week. The computed tomography scan showed that it was a fetus measuring 13 cm inside his belly.
The state of the child after surgery is stable, but complications can yet appear and he is thus permanently supervised.
The operation was performed by pediatric surgeon, academician Eva Gudumac. This lasted for an hour and, according to doctors, was less difficult than in case of tumors.
Fetus-in-fetu is an extremely rare abnormality. A similar case was recorded at the Mother and Child Institute six years ago. Surgery was then performed successfully also by Eva Gudumac.
