State of health of ex-Premier Filat worsens

Former Prime Minister Vlad Filat, who serves time in Penitentiary No. 13, on August 8 was escorted to a private clinic in Chisinau for medical examinations. The ex-Premier’s lawyer Igor Popa has told IPN that the state of health of Filat worsened owing to the detention conditions and he is thus receiving treatment. The lawyer didn’t say what kind of health problems Filat experiences.

Igor Popa also avoided commenting on the transfer of Vlad Filat from Penitentiary No. 13 to the penitentiary in Lipcani, where he is to serve his sentence in accordance with the court’s judgment.

The Buiucani Court of Chisinau on June 27, 2016 sentenced Vlad Filat to nine years in jail and fined him 60,000 lei for abuse of power and passive corruption based on self-denouncing statements made by Ilan Shor, who said that he offered Vlad Filat money and presents to the value of about US$250 million in exchange for governmental services when this served as Premier. Vlad Filat pleads not guilty. His lawyers said Filat intends to go to the European Court of Human Rights.
