State intends to lease out Chisinau International Airport

The Chisinau International Airport may be leased out. The proposal was submitted by the Ministry of Economy in the first meeting of the National Council for Public-Private Partnership. The Council’s deputy head, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy Valeriu Lazar said the airport can be leased out for up to 25 years, Info-Prim Neo reports. “The airport needs enormous investments in order to develop and become competitive in the region. Despite the traffic growth, this growth is modest and the company cannot ensure the necessary investments. They can take out loans, but they are expensive and exert pressure on the prices,” Valeriu Lazar said, adding a transparent contest with tough requirements will be held according to the experience of other countries. Another project discussed in the meeting was the construction and modernization of dorms. “At the suggestion of the State University of Moldova, there will be built new dorms for students. These services will be very competitive as the students now pay by 1 000 lei a month to have where to sleep. The dormitories may be modernized by attracting private capital to the existent infrastructure,” said the minister. The Ministry of Health proposed a project concerning dialysis and radiotherapy services. “The necessary investments amount to tens of millions of euros. These public services are needed as the people have to pay large sums of money for such services abroad. The state is unable to make these investments,” he stated. The members of the National Council for Public-Private Partnership came together for a meeting for the first time. They examined a series of organizational issues and possible public-private partnerships in such areas as healthcare, education and air transport infrastructure.
