State guaranteed legal aid will include civil lawsuits from 2012

From 2012, the state guaranteed legal aid will include civil lawsuits, Minister of Justice Alexandru Tanase said in a yearly conference centering on the development trends in the system, Info-Prim Neo reports. “The system was launched over two years ago. Every year, we hold such conferences that are like workshops. Everyone states their opinions. We discuss the identified problems and proposals for solving them,” said the head of the National Council for State Guaranteed Legal Aid Victor Zaharia. The state guaranteed legal aid is now provided only in criminal cases. One of the drawbacks of the system is the insufficiency of financial resources for remunerating the lawyers working in the system, said the coordinator of the Chisinau Local Office of the National Council for State Guaranteed Legal Aid Lilian Darii. According to him, the people do not trust the lawyers appointed by the state. Thus their image and credibility should be improved. The system of state guaranteed legal aid was introduced in July 2008. There are five local state guaranteed legal aid offices - in Chisinau, Balti, Cahul, Bender, and Comrat. About 350 lawyers work in the system.
