Moldova’s flag was transmitted to the national squad that will represent the Republic of Moldova at the 2023 FISU Summer World University Games that will take place in China’s Chengdu during July 28 – August 8. The flag will be carried by archer Dan Olaru, IPN reports.
Dan Olaru said that it is an honor for him to carry the national flag, noting that he will fulfill his duties with respect and pride.
Minister of Education and Research Dan Perciun stated that the athletes are the real ambassadors of the country. Each victory should be celebrated by the whole society. Immediately after they return home, they will come to the Ministry with the entire sports community to consider what can be done for them to enjoy greater support, not only applause and speeches.
The delegation’s head, secretary general of the Student Sports Federation Veaceslav Mârzac said the number of athletes who take part in the University Game rises annually. In the first year of participation, in 1959, there were fewer than 1,000 contenders, while in the last edition, of 2019, the competition involved 9,500 athletes. Over 10,000 sportspersons are expected to contend at the event this year.
The Republic of Moldova will be represented by 18 athletes who will compete in eight events, namely: athletics, judo, archery, taekwondo, swimming, fencing, canoeing, and table tennis.
Moldova has taken part in the World University Games since 1995 and so far has won 27 medals: four golds, four silvers, and 19 bronzes.
