Stanca-Costesti dam level dropped 19cm overnight

Dam levels at Stanca-Costesti on the Prut dropped by 19cm over the past night to reach 97.9m at 8:00AM. The Stanca-Costesti dam is 43 meters high and the adjacent reservoir is 67 meters deep, which sets the critical level at around 99.9 meters. Ivan Cucenic, department head at the national water agency, has told the agency Info-Prim Neo that controlled discharges from the reservoir are done at volumes of 850m3/sec, half the level two days ago. According to Cucenic, water is still high and flowing fast, yet the flow of the Prut is decreasing. To reduce the risk of floods in the settlements nearby, new dikes are being erected and the old ones are being reinforced. The situation along Moldova's largest river, the Nistru, is still alarming, especially for the villages of Puhaceni, Speia, Gura Bycului and for several other settlement in Stefan-Voda distric, because of higher water levels following discharges at the Dubasari dam. But the situation is expected to improve, with discharges being lowered at the Novodnetsrovsk dam located upstream in Ukraine. Ivan Cucenic gave assurances that the Ghidighici dam that protects Moldova's capital Chisinau from flooding was secure.
