Two out of five operating rooms at the St. Michael the Archangel Hospital in Chisinau have received modern equipment thanks to a grant from the Japanese Government’s Kusane Human Security Grants Program.
The $82,000 grant was used to buy electrosurgery devices, anesthetic machines, an operating table and a surgical lighthead.
Attending the event to present the new additions, Japanese Ambassador Masanobu Yoshii said the purchase had been approved already in 2016 when the two operating rooms started to be repaired. The diplomat praised the quality of the repair and remarked that the new, European-standard equipment will enable doctors to provide medical services to patients at an advanced level.
Mihai Ciobanu, the hospital’s director, said the new equipment is a source of great delight for the entire medical staff, as before the renovation surgeons had to operate with 1960s-generation equipment.
The municipal St. Michael Hospital performs about 3,600 surgeries every year.
The Kusanone Program was launched in Moldova in 2008. Since then, 55 projects, mainly in the field of public health and school and preschool education, have received non-reimbursable funding from the Government of Japan totalling over $4.5 million.
