The goal of bomb scares whose number increased considerably the last few months is to cause anxiety in society. Behind them there are “elements” that want to destabilize the situation in the country. Those involved also aim to delay trials. The courts of law represent the largest number of the institutions against which bomb threats are made, President Maia Sandu stated after the meeting of the Supreme Security Council.
The official said the responsible institutions, especially the Security and Intelligence Service and the Ministry of the Interior, designed a risk assessment mechanism that is based on three alert levels. The responsible services will intervene depending on the assessment results. There will be applied less invasive procedures, but without making compromises with regard to the security of citizens.
Maia Sandu noted that the punishments for authors of bomb hoaxes will be made harsher. Currently, these persons face a fine of 27,500 lei to 42,500 lei, 240 hours of community service or up to two years in jail.
The number of threats in Moldova has increased significantly the recent months. Over 3,200 police officers were involved in the related examinations. According to the General Police Inspectorate, over 880 bomb hoaxes have been reported so far this year. The damage caused to the state by these was estimated at over 2.2 million lei.
