Speeding driver who left young woman without both legs sentenced to 2 years in prison

The driver who left 25-year-old Marcela Paladi a double amputee after he hit her on Chisinau’s Viaduct in February has been sentenced to 2 years in an open prison, plus three years of probation for the remainder of the sentence (18 months). The Chisinau/Buiucani Court also ordered the man to pay 2 million lei in damages plus expenses.

Prosecutors said in a press release the man’s license will be canceled once the sentence becomes irreversible.

The court today also upheld the seizure imposed on March 30 on the driver’s assets, including his bank accounts, to make the judgment enforceable.

On February 6, the car in which Marcela was traveling as a passenger had been involved in a minor nighttime accident. When reaching for the warning triangle inside the boot, Marcela was struck from behind by a car at a high speed, her legs crushed between the bumpers. As a result, she lost both legs.

The sentence may be appealed within 15 days.
