Specialists from districts trained in early childhood intervention

Family doctors, pediatricians, neuro-pediatricians, psychologists, kineto-therapists and physiatrists from different districts of Moldova are familiarized with early intervention practices in case of developmental disorders in children so as to faster involve these in treatment and rehabilitation programs. The training courses are taught by specialists of the Early Intervention Center “Voinicel”, while the trainees were selected by the Ministry of Health, IPN reports.

Two teams from Balti district receive training during March 21-24, 2017. This is the second training session of the five planned for 2017. Fifteen teams will attend these courses during the next three years.

“Voinicel” Center director Ivan Puiu, in the opening of the training courses, said it is very important that the attending doctors should be able to develop early intervention services at the workplace, in the native districts. “The child with special needs requires a multilateral approach. We cannot shift all the responsibilities on the family doctors. The family doctor has the duty to early detect the developmental disorder and to redirect the child to early intervention services for interdisciplinary support intended for the family,” stated Ivan Puiu.

Pediatrician of the Temporary Placement and Rehabilitation Center of Balti Maria Bruma said the training courses for doctors and the initiative to set up centers to support children with development disorders outside Chisinau are welcome. “To have fewer children with any kind of problems, it is very important to early diagnose these problems and to determine the suitable intervention strategy. This work starts from the family doctor,” stated Maria Bruma.

Irina Apostolova, the mother of a child with disabilities, said she saw significant progress in the development of her child after they started to attend the Center “Voinicel” and she is confident that the child will develop new skills. Such early intervention services are welcome and need to be multiplied so as to give the children the chance to have a normal life.

The Early Intervention Center “Voinicel” is a pilot center in Moldova where an interdisciplinary team of specialists provide early intention services and psychological support and empowerment to parents and three-year-old children with special needs. Among the beneficiaries of the Center are families with children with developmental disorders, cerebral paltry, autism, speech impairments, the Down syndrome and others. The Center’s specialists provide consultancy to about 200 families from different districts of the country annually.

The training courses on early childhood intervention are staged within the project “Extension of the medical-social early intervention service for the child with disabilities in the districts of the Republic of Moldova” with private financial support from Austria, in partnership with the Ministry of Health of Moldova.
