Speaker Mihai Ghimpu about first parliamentary season: “AEI passed its first exam”

“The Alliance for European Integration (AEI) that came to power after the July 29 elections passed its first serious exam,” the Head of Parliament and Moldova's Acting President Mihai Ghimpu said at the end of the first session of the 18th Parliament. He also said that the legislature achieved results even if it did not have a head office, offices and computers, Info-Prim Neo reports. Mihai Ghimpu summed up the Parliament's work during the last four months, saying there were held 30 sittings and adopted 129 laws. Speaking about the Parliament's activity at foreign level, the Speaker said that the current session saw an improvement in Moldova's bilateral and multilateral relations with the countries of the region and the international organizations. “The relations between Moldova and the EU reached a new level. Encouraged by the Government and the Parliament, these relations will culminate in January next year with the opening of the talks on the signing of the Association Agreement between Moldova and the EU,” the Speaker said. Ghimpu also said that one of the failures of the current sessions was the non-election of the head of state. “Unfortunately, we failed to elect the President of Moldova owing to the intransigence of our colleagues from the Opposition. In principle, the Parliament should be dissolved and there should be held early elections after June 16, 2010. But I consider that the early elections are not the best way out,” Ghimpu said, stressing that they will look for other solutions to overcome the constitutional crisis.
