Speaker calls on EU member states to offer accession prospect to Moldova

Head of Parliament Igor Corman called upon the EU member states to initiate the planning of the accession by Moldova and other EaP member states to the European Union in recognition of the results of the efforts made on the path to European integration. The request was made in the Conference of Heads of Parliament of the EU Member States held in Vilnius, Lithuania, on April 7, IPN reports.

“I think time has come to recognize the European prospect of such countries as Moldova, which engaged fully and constantly in the European integration process,” Igor Corman said, adding that the offering of a clear EU accession prospect will help strengthen the progressive and pro-European forces of Moldova.

As to the situation in the region, the Speaker said that Moldova is for adopting a cooperation-based approach without confrontations and is interested in developing good relations both with Ukraine and with Russia. “It’s not right to make somebody choose between the West and the East,” stated Igor Corman.

On the sidelines of the conference, Igor Corman had meetings with the Marshal of the Polish Senate Bogdan Borusewicz and the chairmen of the Chambers of Deputies of the Parliaments of the Czech Republic and Romania Jan Hamacek and Valeriu Stefan Zgonea.
