The Soros Foundation Moldova is becoming even more active in protecting democracy and the rule of law, as well as in advancing Moldova’s European integration, the organization said in a statement. Since it was established thirty years ago, the Foundation has stood by the Moldovan society, transforming together, initiating and supporting changes for the better.
“In order to increase the positive impact around the world, the group of the Open Society Foundations, of which the Soros Foundation Moldova is a part, carried out a process of re-evaluation and repositioning of its activity. We need to act more skillfully and bravely where the society of the Republic of Moldova has a greater need”, says the statement.
“The Soros Foundation Moldova is reaffirming its support for the Republic of Moldova and its commitment to remain a reliable partner, which promotes and defends a just and healthy society, with efficient and responsible institutions; functional and free economy, where people and communities have the chance to build a better future", Petru Culeac, executive director of the Soros Foundation Moldova, said.
For several years now, democracy around the world has been facing increasingly serious threats: countries that seemed to be moving towards solid democracy are increasingly influenced by authoritarian forces. The Republic of Moldova, which throughout its history has seen several attempts to establish authoritarian regimes, has survived thanks to the people who opposed it. Our role is to support those people who continue to build a democratic, just society, where everyone has a chance to build a better future, the press release also states.
The Soros Foundation Moldova was created in 1992 by the philanthropist George Soros. During its three decades of activity, George Soros has invested over 140 million dollars in the Republic of Moldova.
