Soroca school principal arrested for selling graduation diplomas

A 64 year old woman working as principal at a school in Soroca was arrested by the officers of the National Investigation Inspectorate when receiving 1000 lei from a graduate of the school. The arrest took place in her office, where she was taking money to issue a graduation diploma, IPN reports.

According to a press release of the General Inspectorate of Police, the principal told the officers that she extorted money from a student for non-attendance and even issued an informal receipt, reading “tuition fee 2014-2015”.

After a search of her office, the police found unofficial registries, schedules, receipts, lists of students who paid and those who would pay from 1000 to 3000 lei. The officers seized about 50,000 lei in cash.

The woman will be charged with bribery and extortion, punishable by a fine of up to 80,000 lei or 2 to 7 years in jail.
