The MPs of the Șor Party returned to the legislative proposal presented in 2019, which enables the people to elect the prosecutor general. According to them, the Prosecutor’s Office, which is a key institution in the administration of justice, should abide by the law and should be subordinate to the citizens and the rule of law, not to politicians. MP Marina Tauber told a news conference that namely the citizens of the Republic of Moldova should decide who should be the prosecutor general. According to her, only this way this post and the prosecution service can become apolitical, IPN reports.
“Regrettably, in the recent past we have witnessed a number of events that are political, not legal in character. To avoid interpretations and to prevent the decisions in the Prosecutor General’s Office and in other fields and institutions, primarily in the justice sector, being taken by politicians, we must mandatorily adopt this important decision,” said the MP. She noted that the scandal around the suspension and arrest of the prosecutor general seriously spoils Moldova’s image at domestic and foreign levels, further increasing distrust in justice and democratic processes. According to the MP, as long as the politicians control the prosecution service, the reforms in the field are ineffective.
“To break this vicious circle and to restore the people’s confidence in the prosecution service, making sure that the prosecutor general is elected directly by all the citizens, not by politicians and by people from the system, is the only correct and efficient solution. The people must have a say when it is decided who will do them justice.”
In 2019, the given legislative proposal was signed by 25 MPs. The parliamentary group of Șor Party suggests creating a working group consisting of MPs and experts who would pronounce on this bill.
