Some of Moldova's NGOs only absorb grants, opinions

There are over 8,000 nongovernmental organizations in Moldova and not all of them are productive. A part of them obtain funds within projects, but direct the money towards other activities. Such an opinion was stated during a training seminar for journalists by the moderators, Info-Prim Neo reports. “The NGOs in Moldova are weird. There are nongovernmental organizations that do their job, but some of them only absorb grants and this is visible,” said Valeriu Cater, editor at Publika TV. According to him, there are few successful NGOs in Moldova, which are representative offices of international organizations. Ramona Ursu, editor-in-chief of the paper Adevarul, believes that 8,000 NGOs is too much for Moldova. Among them are organizations that waste the money on useless activities. Petru Macovei, executive director of the Association of Independent Press, said the NGOs that dealt with interesting subjects attracted the attention of the mass media. The treatment of these subjects in the press in cooperation with the given NGOs produced positive results. One of the positive examples given was the National Center “La Strada”, which contributed to the annihilation of a network of foreign pedophiles who sexually abused Moldovan children. The training seminar for journalists centering on success stories among NGOs was organized within the Moldova Civil Society Strengthening Program that is implemented by the Academy for Educational Development with financial support from the United States Agency for International Development.
