Some like keeping waste in the house, Dorin Chirtoaca

The dwellers of a number of Chisinau apartment buildings won the right to continue using the garbage rooms inside blocks from where the waste is collected manually. In the summer of 2009, the local authorities decided to seal these rooms up in order to prevent the rats from spreading. Some of the dwellers refused to take the garbage to the waste platforms set up in the yards and challenged the municipal authorities’ decision in court, Info-Prim Neo reports. Petru Gontea, the head of the Public Amenities Division, said Monday that only 133 of the 185 garbage rooms were closed. A part of them were reopened under the Court of Appeals’ decision. There are 13 apartment buildings in Chisinau that use such rooms at present. “Unfortunately, some of the people like keeping the waste in the house. They do no like to have rats in their basements, but do not want to take the garbage outside,” Mayor Dorin Chirtoaca said. He instructed the Public Amenities Division to continue informing the people about the risks posed by these infection centers. The problem must be solved by spring, the mayor added.
