On March 27, it is 103 years since the People’s Council voted for the union of Bessarabia with Romania. On this occasion, a solemn meeting involving a number of state officials is held in Chisinau to commemorate the day of March 27, 1918, IPN reports.
In the solemn meeting, the president of the Academy of Sciences of Moldova Ion Tighineanu said the declaration on the union of Bessarabia with Romania contributed decisively to the development of the nation, having a special significance for the Romanian people and scientific community. It is the duty of the followers to truthfully reflect the historical events. The building where the declaration was voted was ultimately rehabilitated. The position of the Academy of Sciences of Moldova on the Romanian language remained unchanged in time, namely that Romanian is the true name of our language.
The Romanian Academy’s president Ioan Aurel Pop said that on March 27 all the Romanians should think about the reunified country as the generation of Ion Inculeț, Pan Halippa, Nicolae Iorga, Ionel Brătianu did. Bessarabia was the first Romanian province that gave an example of reunification to other Romanian provinces.
Romania’s Ambassador to Moldova Daniel Ioniță expressed his conviction that Romania and the Republic of Moldova, only together, by their political view, courage and projects implemented for the benefit of the citizens will manage to erase forever the yet visible consequences of the Ribbentrop-Molotov pact. The relations between the two states are based on the common language, history and culture, being based on the European partnership of the Republic of Moldova. Romania has been close in time to the Republic of Moldova with unconditional support and also offered medical equipment and vaccines for overcoming the pandemic.
MP Maria Ciobanu said that 103 years ago history offered the Romanians the chance of having a decent and great destiny. The supreme ideal of the national unity became a reality on April 27, 1918. The union of the Romanians from the two banks of the Prut healed a Romanian nation’s wound that had been bleeding for over 100 years. The Romanian Bessarabia in spirit and nature became Romanian in law and word. At the start of 1990s, it was believed that the roots would be restored, but it wasn’t meant to be and the future politicians didn’t set the union as an objective.
Ana Guțu, secretary of state at the Department for Relations with the Republic of Moldova, noted that March 27, 1918 marks an important event in the history of Romanians, witch mobilizes all the people for comprehending the common Romanian history, the history of Romanians, the Romanian identity of those from the current Republic of Moldova, especially those who become responsible for the future of his piece of land. Moldova has been independent for 30 years, but has experienced a profound identity crisis and also a political crisis since 2015. The role of the Moldovan politicians is to assume responsibility for the historical past that could serve as a source in the actions for bringing the two Romanian states closer.
103 years ago, the People’s Council voted in favor of the union of Bessarabia with Romania, with Bessarabia keeping its autonomy and the right to have its own legislative body.
