Soldiers killed in Afghan war are commemorated on February 15

Festivities to remember the soldiers who died in the war in Afghanistan will take place on February 15 for the first time all over Moldova. A commemoration service will be held at the Metropolitan Cathedral in Chisinau starting at 9am, Info-Prim Neo reports. After the service, the Union of the Afghan War Veterans and government officials will lay flowers to the monument to Stephan the Great. A march from the Great National Assembly Square to the memorial to the Afghan war heroes, which is located on Miron Costin St, will start at 11am. A concert will follow at the National Palace at 3pm. On February 15, 2011 it is 22 years of the withdrawal of the troops from Afghanistan. A million people from the Commonwealth of Independent States, including 12,000 Moldovans, had fought in that war. About 15,000 soldiers did not return home.
