Software for random court case assignment to be upgraded

The software for the random assignment of court cases will be upgraded. The announcement was made by the chairman of the Superior Council of Magistracy, Victor Micu, during the “Replica” talk-show on Prime TV, IPN reports.

According to Micu, the upgrade will increase the complexity of the software in order to prevent hacking and ensure a more exact monitoring of the cases under examination. The upgrade became necessary after a scheme was discovered last week at the Rascani Court, where a judge and several court clerks managed to tamper with the software so that some cases would get to be assigned to a certain judge. Micu announced that the new system will be implemented first at the Chisinau Court of Appeals and at one of the district courts.

Bogdan Zumbreanu, head of the criminal investigation division of the National Anticorruption Center (CNA), stated during the same talk-show that the investigators suppose the Rascani scheme involved a person from outside the judiciary, possibly an IT expert, who is yet to be identified. Zumbreanu didn't tell any names but said that the suspected judge had resigned a while ago. The decision regarding his prosecution will be taken by the Prosecutor's Office. At the moment, two suspects are under arrest and two under house arrest.

Zumbreanu is optimistic about CNA's success in the fight against corruption, especially about after some amendments to the law. “For nearly two years, we had our hands tied after being stripped of the right of tapping someone without first informing the suspect about it. Otherwise, the gathered evidence was unlawful”, said Zumbreanu.
