The Party of Socialists (PSRM) questions the legality of the decision by which the Constitutional Court annulled the amendments providing for the election of the head of state in Parliament and restored the old method of electing the President, by the people’s vote. In this connection, the Socialists intend to ask the international community and the Venice Commission to pronounce on the legitimacy of the future presidential elections, IPN reports.
“Most of the people want the President to be elected by their vote. But the way in which this election method was decided generates doubt. The Constitution should have been amended in Parliament, by the votes of at least 67 MPs, or by a referendum. If they had done so, the legitimacy was greater. We, the Socialists, will ask for the opinion of the international community and the Venice Commission about the amendment of the Constitution. The President must be recognized not only in the country, but also outside it,” stated the Socialists’ leader Igor Dodon.
If the legitimacy of the future presidential elections is recognized, the Socialists will take part in them. “But we do not give up the demand to organize early parliamentary elections. These should be held simultaneously with the presidential elections. For the purpose, the protests should be continued, until we manage to obtain early elections,” stated the politician.
Igor Dodon added that the presidential elections should take place in May-June. He is convinced that Moldova’s future President will represent the opposition. He is ready to run for the presidency, but only if such a decision is taken at party level.
