The MPs of the Party of Socialists propose that Europe Day should not be marked on May 9, but on May 8. They put forward a decision to amend the Parliament decision concerning commemorative and nonworking days and bank holidays, IPN reports.

“May 9 during over seven decades has been associated by the people with the Victory against Nazi repressions during World War II. However, in 2017, the then parliamentary majority, even if the country’s population massively celebrated the Victory Day, decided to diminish the significance of this day by instituting a parallel holiday on this day. The institution of Europe Day on May 9, simultaneously with Victory Day, took place without public consultations and even contrary to the opinion of the majority. The then authorities explained that by such a step the Republic of Moldova comes close to the European Union, given that the member states mark Europe Day on this day,” says the informative note to the decision.

According to the MPs, by their essence the two holidays disseminate compatible values and ideas and they both serve to promote the general-human values. Consequently, in order to achieve the goal of propagating the values promoted by the two holidays, it is opportune and absolutely necessary to delimit them on the calendar.
 
Europe Day or Schuman Day is annually celebrated by the European community and the partner countries on May 9. The holiday was instituted in memory of the Minister of Foreign Affairs of France Robert Schuman, who is considered the initiator of the founding of the European Union.
