The MPs of the Party of Socialists threatened Minister of Education and Research Anatolie Topală that they will propose a no-confidence motion against him if he does not ensure broad public consultations on the higher education reform. They demanded to question the minister in Parliament, but their proposal was short of votes, IPN reports.
According to the Socialists, such a reform cannot be done without this being extensively debated with the academia, with university staff and with specialists working in the field in conditions of maximum transparency. This reform should be assumed also by Parliament.
“If someone considers such a move represents economizing, optimization of public resources, they are seriously wrong. This so-called reform will not bring benefits to the budget. It will cause only damage to the national public interest. We will further lose our young people. It is not known how much money the state will save. If those who are in power cannot ensure sustainable economic development, cannot safeguard the state interests and cannot ensure appropriate financing for education, they should leave,” Socialist MP Vlad Batrîncea told a news conference.
He said he is against the absorption of a number of universities, including the Agrarian University, the University of Physical Education and Sport, the Taraclia University as each of these institutions is important and broad public consultations should be held on the issue.
“This so-called reform should be stopped. If the minister, Mister Topală, does not communicate with teaching staff and does not ensure authentic, transparent public consultations on this reform, we will propose a no-confidence motion against the policy pursued by the Ministry of Education and against you. Leave your office, Mister Topală. Visit the institutions whose future you decide unilaterally,” stated Vlad Batrîncea.
