Socialists say Moldova should temper its EU aspiration

The Socialist Party Patria-Rodina says Moldova should not be hurried into the European Union, as the EU itself is not yet ready to accept us. “It seems Russia has nothing to offer us either, yet this doesn’t justify our haste in getting ourselves into the EU”, Patria-Rodina’s president Veronica Abramciuc told a press conference on the 85th anniversary of the foundation of the USSR. In her words, Moldova had the experience of being part of a federal state – the Soviet Union – which, unlike the European Union, guaranteed the equality of all its members, while the planned economy raised the levels of living and ensured economic growth in all the republics. Today, Abramciuc said, the European Union cannot offer Moldova such guarantees. As some say Moldova would have better chances of being accepted into the EU if it joined NATO, Abramciuc thinks Moldova should not accept such conditions, because the country could be used in a potential conflict between the mighty powers. “Living in a liberal world, no one is interested in your well-being without you having to pay the price of constrained freedom of choice and action”, said Veronica Abramciuc, adding that the situation in Moldova is very unstable now and it cannot afford taking wrong steps.
