Socialists request CC to reject Liberals’ application concerning language functioning

The Party of Socialists (PSRM) firmly condemns the Liberal Party’s initiative to abrogate the laws that regulate the status of the Russian language as a language of interethnic communication. On June 4, the Socialists staged a protest in front of the Constitutional Court where the Liberals’ application was being examined, IPN reports.

“The Party of Socialists describes this initiative as an irresponsible provocation on the part of the antagonized party of Mihai Ghimpu. Moving towards political decline, this party is trying to catch attention by spreading hatred and ethnical intolerance in our society and causing ethnic conflicts,” the PSRM says in a statement.

The party noted that the law on the functioning of the languages spoken on Moldova’s territory that was adopted in 1989 was a historical legal act that laid the foundations of the interethnic relations in the Republic of Moldova throughout the country’s independence period. Namely owing to this law, at the start of the 1990s the situation in Gagauzia could be solved and the law on the creation of ATU Gagauzia could be adopted.

“The status of the Moldovan (Romanian, e.n.) language and the status of the Russian language as a language of interethnic communication are the basis of national consensus and civil stability in our multiethnic society. The guarantee of the conservation, development and functioning of the Russian language and other languages in our country is stipulated in the Constitution of the Republic of Moldova. Any attempt to change this law and to ignore the principles of a national consensus will lead to the destabilization of society, which can have unpredictable consequences,” reads the statement.

The PSRM supports the inviolability of all the provisions of the law on the functioning of languages on Moldova’s territory, including the order concerning the status of the Russian language as a language of interethnic communication. The party calls on all the political and civil forces of the country, regardless of the political affiliation, to unite and protect democracy, human rights and interethnic peace in the Republic of Moldova.

In the event, Socialist MP Vladimir Turcan said that if the request to reject the Liberals’ application is not heard, large-scale protests will be mounted.
