If the Eurointegration Alliance (AIE) and the Communist Party (PCRM) agree on an unaffiliated presidential candidate, the Socialist MPs will vote for him or her, in order to overcome the political crisis and without claiming any state posts, the Socialist Party said in a statement. “We are ready to vote for an unaffiliated President proposed by the AIE or the PCRM, or by both of them. All they need to do now is just propose one already, because all we hear is empty talk from them and nothing else. If they cannot find one, the Socialists have plenty worthy candidates that could be considered for election”, reads the statement. The Socialists think that the meeting between PCRM and AIE is opportune, yet too much postponed. “It is obvious that this meeting is rather for appearances only, because the Communists are still looking forward to early elections, but they want to create the illusion that they are willing to resolve the political crisis. And the Alliance leaders are playing their own games, together and separately”. The Socialist Party insists on the need to reset the ruling alliance and the government strategy and hopes that the Communists, in negotiating with the AIE, won't play into the hands of the latter in exchange for some state posts or protection from the government. The Socialists further state that the delay in electing the President gives reason to suspect that someone is looking to prolong the political crisis. “Maybe someone feels frustrated after being forced to quit the presidential race and now, in a bid to demonstrate that if he is not proposed then no one will be elected, creates impasse situations? We will observe how the situation develops to see if these suspicions are justified”. The deadline for nominating presidential candidates is January 12, with the vote scheduled for January 15. However, no candidate has been registered so far.
