The Socialist parliamentary group has challenged the extension of the ongoing state of emergency at the Constitutional Court.

According to the Socialists, the measure adopted by the governing Action and Solidarity Party is baseless and fraught with violations of the national and international law.

“One of the reasons brought forth for the decision – the regional factor and the refugee inflow – is no longer an issue. In fact, regulatory and logistical measures have already been adopted and undertaken. The second argument – the energy factor – is not a good reason either, because in Moldova both Parliament and the Government exercise a full and functional mandate, which does not require the adoption of prompt measures by exception from the general legal framework”, argue the Socialists.

On June 23, the state of emergency originally instituted on February 24 with the Russian invasion of Ukraine has been further extended by 45 more days. In requesting the extension, Prime Minister Natalia Gavrilița stated that the Government needs instruments for prompt and effective decisions that otherwise can’t be adopted under normal rules. These involve funding procedures, simplification of customs clearance rules, and moving of goods and passengers, among others.
