Socialists challenge constitutionality of Law on Status of Chisinau Municipality

After the Law on the Status of Chisinau Municipality was disputed at the Constitutional Court by the European People’s Party of Moldova on June 21, the Party of Socialists also filed a similar challenge today, June 22. The Socialists say that this law is unconstitutional and runs counter to a number of international arrangements to which Moldova is a party, IPN reports.

The leader of the Socialist group on the Chisinau Municipal Council Ion Ceban told the press that this legal act violates the principle of separation of powers in the local public administration. The powers of the councilors are fully transferred to the mayor of Chisinau.

Ion Ceban said that today they submitted an application whereby they challenge the conception, but in several days will submit by a challenge over each article separately. “We presume that the whole law could remain in force and this will be again a political order. We thus have a reserve variant – to obtain the annulment of the articles of this law where there are significant abuses,” he stated.

Earlier, both the European People’s Party of Moldova and the Party of Socialists called on President Nicolae Timofti not to promulgate the Law on the Status of Chisinau Municipality, which was adopted by Parliament on June 17.
