Socialists ask CC to examine Electoral Code provisions

Socialist MPs requested the Constitutional Court (CC) to determine the constitutionality of provisions of the recently amended Electoral Code. According to them, the challenged norms limit the citizens’ right to enjoy a democratic electoral process, IPN reports.

Among the disputed norms are the provisions concerning the Central Election Commission’s right (discretion) not obligation to establish polling stations for the voters from the left side of the Nistru. The Socialists consider the citizens’ constitutional right to vote is this way encroached upon.

They also challenge Article 70, par. (4) of the Electoral Code, which allows for derogation from the general rules on campaigning and permits the use of EU symbols and imagines.

The Socialist MPs also consider that the ballots should be printed in two languages, Moldovan and Russian, as it should be in a multiethnic state like the Republic of Moldova.

“Having the whole electoral pyramid at its beck and call, the government does not care about the citizens’ attitude to it and it wants the vassals from the CEC to count the votes as the government and its partners need,” said MP Vasile Bolea.

“It is important to ensure a free, democratic and fair electoral process in the Republic of Moldova. The law should not be changed as the government likes as the governments come and go, while the laws should have effects in the future,” noted MP Grigore Novac.
