Socialists and Lib-Dems request CC to examine bill on direct election of President

Socialist MP Vladimir Turcan and Liberal-Democratic MP Chiril Lucinschi on February 17 filed a common application to the Constitutional Court (CC), asking it to pronounce on the bill to elect the head of state by direct vote, IPN reports.

Chiril Lucinschi told the press that the application was signed by 37 MPs, including Lib-Dem Vlad Filat, who is now in jail. The signatories include 24 Socialist MPs and 13 lawmakers of the Liberal Democratic Party, together with George Mocanu and Valeriu Giletski. The CC is to pronounce on the issue within ten days.

“We hope that this bill will be examined as a matter of urgency and we will obtain a positive appraisal so as to afterward submit it to Parliament. If those from the government keep their word, we will be able to vote in Parliament amendments to the Constitution so that it allows for the election of the head of state by the people,” said Vladimir Turcan.

If the CC’s appraisal is positive, the MPs can file the bill to Parliament within six months.
