Social Democrats to continue protesting

The Social Democratic Party (PSD) will continue protesting, announced PSD president Victor Selin on Saturday after meeting with acting President Marian Lupu, Info-Prim Neo reports. “We will carry on our protests until people's problems are solved. We demand a review of the rates on gas, electricity and heat supply. I also told President Marian Lupu that we do not agree with the 2012 Budget, because it plans further price increases”, said Selin. Nicolae Racovita, chairman of the independent Labor Union “Protectia Sociala”, who participated in the meeting with Marian Lupu, said he suggested that the list of the so-called socially-important goods, that is, whose markup is state regulated, should be extended. This and other proposals will be considered by a special commission created by the Government to examine the issue of tariffs and rates. Marian Lupu, for his part, noted that the issues addressed at the meeting were indeed important, especially during this part of the year. He said deputies from some parliamentary committees would also join the governmental commission to contribute with solutions to social issues. It was also agreed that the Competition Protection Agency would advance proposals to improve the legislation on monopolies with a view to removing them in areas of social importance. The Social Democratic Party started protesting last Saturday. Today its members and supporters gathered outside the Government building seeking better social conditions, in particular lower utility rates. In case of a negative outcome, the party said it would initiate a class action against the Government.
