The Social Democracy Party has announced on Saturday, November 18 the creation of its women’s wing. Dumitru Braghis, the chairman of SDP declared in the opening of the conference that the organization is to craft and promote policies for the integration of women into society and politics. In light of the fact that the state is obliged to ensure equal rights to women, the organization must force the state to carry out its commitments in this respect, the cited source said. The organization decided to insist in its programme upon promoting representatives of both genders in the local elections of 2007; including in the electoral strategy of SDP solutions for the domestic violence, trafficking in human beings, the discriminatory situation of women on the labor market etc. Catinca Mardarovici was elected as leader of the women organization. Ala Odagiu, Tatiana Tofan and Nina Gherasimovici were elected as vice-presidents. At present, 48% of SDP members are women. The Social Democracy Party was created on April 15 2006. The Chairman of the party is the former prime-minister Dumitru Braghis. The Party is represented in the Parliament by 4 MPs who entered the Parliament on the lists of the former bloc “Moldova Democrata”. On Sunday, November 19 the national constituting conference of the Youth Organization of SDP will take place in Chisinau.
