Snoring poses threats to snorers, professor

Though snoring seems a banal symptom, it poses a number of threats to the life of the snorers. In Moldova there are no statistics about the number of people affected by this syndrome. Some 5-6% of the people snore worldwide.

Asked by IPN at an international conference centering on snoring in Chisinau, university professor Alexandru Corlateanu said there are no sufficient specialists who would treat people with such a syndrome in Moldova. There are only several private centers that can treat patients with sleeping problems.

The people must not neglect this syndrome. A lot of persons who snore face an increased risk of dying suddenly from cardiac arrest and brain stroke while sleeping. Other risks are related to diabetes, ischemic heart disease, etc.

Alexandru Corlateanu also said that this area started to be studied in Moldova only two years ago, while the Phthizipneumology Institute “Chiril Draganiuc” purchased medical equipment for treating persons who snore.

The snorers include mainly men, obese persons and elderly people.
