Ten rural constituencies will hold snap local elections this coming Sunday.
Eight of them – Ghetlova (Orhei), Horodiște (Rezina); Zastânca (Soroca); Moara de Piatră (Drochia); Tătărești (Strășeni); Glinjeni (Fălești); Zăicani (Râșcani), and Hagimus (Căușeni) – will elect a new mayor.
In two others – Lozova (Strășeni), and Bobeica (Hâncești) – vacant local council seats will be filled.
Polling stations will open at 7:00AM and close at 9:00PM. Voters who cannot come to the polling stations for medical reasons may request a mobile ballot box.
According to the National Election Register, there are 22,000 eligible voters in the ten constituencies. The largest constituency is Lozova, with 5,487 voters, and the smallest is Horodiște, with 981 voters.
A total of over 22,000 ballot papers were printed, at a cost of 0.89 lei apiece for the mayoral elections, and 1.29 lei for the local council ones.
The electoral authorities recall that campaigning on election day and the day before is strictly forbidden. This does not apply to online content published prior to this.
The May 29 elections will be monitored by 59 observers. The human rights group Promo-LEX has deployed 46 observers, and 13 others are representatives of the electoral competitors involved. The alleged violations may be reported online at www.observator.cec.md , and the electoral authorities promise to process them in the promptest manner possible.
