The intersection of Dacia Blvd with Băcioii Noi St is the first intersection in the municipality of Chisinau were the traffic lights were replaced with smart ones. The smart traffic lights are a vehicle traffic control system that combines traditional traffic lights with an array of sensors and artificial intelligence to intelligently route vehicle and pedestrian traffic, IPN reports.
“To ensure the safety of pedestrians who cross the given intersection, the public transport stations are being relocated and sidewalks are being built. Pedestrian parapets will also be put up,” said the mayor of Chisinau Ion Ceban.
He noted that this is one of the most dangerous intersections where 70% of the road accidents have a fatal ending, according to the police.
The total cost of the project is of over 4 million lei. The works are close to completion and the new traffic lights will be activated soon.
The municipality said the smart or intelligent traffic lights will also be placed at other intersections on Dacia Blvd, the section between the streets Băcioii Noi and Burebista. The high risk areas will be later assessed to determine where smart traffic lights are also necessary.
