Slavonic Youth Union from Moldova highlights gaps in Draft Education Code

The Draft Education Code contains serious gaps, though it has the task to improve the quality of the educational system, the Slavonic Youth Union from Moldova considers, Info-Prim Neo reports. The Union’s president, Denis Krivchanski, referred to the stipulations of article 7, according to which the state guarantees the constitutional right of the individual to choose the teaching language, at a news conference on Tuesday, October 28 . The phrase “depending on the educational system’s opportunities”, can be differently interpreted, leaving the national minorities in an unpropitious situation, Denis Krivchanski says. According to him, this situation will have a negative impact on the quality and development of the Russian language, as it is the teaching language of minorities in Moldova. “If at present the state pays equal attention to all educational institutions from Moldova, then, when this code comes into force, non-Moldovan schools could be legally neglected, having as a pretext the lack of means, by refusing to prepare the teaching staff and to publish handbooks for these institutions,” the union’s president said. The Union asks the authorities to take attitude and make changes in the Draft Educational Code. The Union also addresses the ethnic-cultural organizations to join the initiating group in supporting their efforts to settle the contradictions through negotiations. The Educational Code, drafted after an initiative by Vladimir Voronin, was launched in September, 19, this year and is to be adopted by the parliament till the end of the year.
