Sixty seniors, the winners from the five districts of the capital city, will meet today, August 10, at the final stage of the Municipal Chess and Checkers Tournament, an event organized by the General Division of Education, Youth and Sports. The “Seniors’ Cup” will take place in “Alunelul” Park, starting at 10:00 a.m.
Contacted by IPN for details, Angela Chiriac, senior specialist in the Division’s Extracurricular Education, Youth and Sports Management Unit, said that the game will last for four hours and 12 winners will be chosen out of the 60 seniors. Also, 25 young amateur chess and checkers players from Chisinau will contend, including from the Specialized Chess Sports School of Chisinau. The main referees will be Valeriu Coadă, secretary general of the Chess Federation of the Republic of Moldova, and Greta Sturza, president of the Checkers Federation of the Republic of Moldova.
Angela Chiriac said that this event aims to popularize chess and checkers among the inhabitants of Chisinau municipality, to promote physical culture and sports, a healthy lifestyle, to strengthen the health of the elderly and to enhance communication between generations.
The winners of the grand final will get prizes for the first place – 5,000 lei, the second place – 3,000 lei and the third place – 1,000 lei, while the young amateurs will receive 250 lei and honorable mentions.
The final stage of the first edition of the Municipal Chess and Checkers Tournament held in 2023 involved 60 seniors, 20 children and 20 chess and checkers amateurs.
