Six persons were arrested in one of the settlements of Cahul district on cigarette smuggling charges. The police also detained a minibus loaded with 179 boxes of cigarettes without excise duties coming from the Transnistrian reign, IPN reports.
The Prosecutor’s Office for Organized Crime and Special Cases said that two inflatable boats, engines for these and automatic inflation devices were found inside the vehicle. The goods were to be transported to Romania by avoiding custom posts. The cigarettes were bought from the Transnistrian region at about €360 per box. In Romania, a box can be sold for €800.
Smuggling in goods on which excise duties are imposed carries a jail term of four to ten years.
